Section 1: Initial concerns: price, billing, and payment options

1. How can Internet Magic charge only US$15 per year, when Network Solutions charges US$35?

In October, 1998, the US Government dissolved Network Solutions' monopoly on domain name registration. The result is that you, the consumer, can now register domains through Internet Magic at a much lower price and with superior customer support. Our prices are lower simply because we are willing to accept less profit in order to sell more domains! Also, Internet Magic doesn't advertise on national TV the way Network Solutions does, and thus we have lower operating expenses. Your Internet Magic domain is every bit as valid as one registered through Network Solutions. At Internet Magic, we think that affordable and user-friendly domain name registration is long overdue.

2. Are there any hidden fees when I use Internet Magic?

There are no hidden fees, charges, or other "catches" to using Internet Magic's registration service. You are not required to host your site on our servers or pay any additional fees. There are no tricks or gimmicks involved. You will not be billed separately by Internic or anyone else for that matter. The $15 fee you pay is the total amount owed for one year of domain registration.

3. What is the price to register a domain for more than one year?

US$15 per year. You can register a domain for up to ten years. Therefore, if you choose to register a domain for one year, the cost is only $15. If you choose to register for two years, the cost is $30, and so on.

4. Do I have to register a domain name for two years initially, like I do with Network Solutions?

Many other registrars force you to register for two years. We think this is ridiculous, and are pleased to offer the full range of registration periods allowed by ICANN. When you register your domain with Internet Magic, you can register for anywhere from one to ten years.

5. What happens when a domain registered with Internet Magic is due for renewal?

When the name is about to expire, Internet Magic will send you an email notifying you that the domain is due for renewal. You will have the option of renewing the domain or not. If you do not disable autorenewal on the domain, then Internet Magic will attempt to rebill your credit card to renew your domain for an additional year. If your credit card is declined, you will receive an email notification, and will be provided the opportunity to try a different payment method.

6. How do I contact Internet Magic?

7. Will my name and/or email address be sold to other companies?

Internet Magic does not ever sell names or email addresses of registered users to any third parties. During the registration process you may choose not to receive the Internet Magic newsletter. If you opt out of the newsletter, you will only receive email from Internet Magic in regard to the purchase or renewal of a domain.

Section 2: Registering a domain name through Internet Magic

1. What are the rules for domain names? Do domain names longer than 26 characters work? What is the maximum length?

Letters and numbers are always valid characters in a domain name. Hyphens may also be used, but may not begin or end your domain name. Spaces and special characters, such as exclamation points (!) and underscores (_), are never permitted in domain names. Formerly, domain names could be no more than 26 characters long. This has recently been changed. A domain name can now be can be up to 63 characters long, not including the four characters used to identify the top-level domain .com, .net, or .org. The advantage to this is that you can now register names that were previously unavailable because of length. Another added benefit is higher search engine rankings. Because search engines react to keywords, the more keywords in your domain name will increase your rankings on search engines.

2. Why would I want to register multiple domain names for my one website?

If you are doing business on the web...

Domain names containing search keywords can boost search engine rankings.
When it comes to search engines... longer is better.  Long names can hold more keywords (the terms people search for) and many search engines give preference to keyword-rich names. 'Embedded keywords' in your domain name is one of several factors considered by search engines in determining rank, and one of the easiest factors to improve.

In today's competitive environment, search engine rankings can make or break a web site.

If you are a florist, a name like
discount-flowers-red-roses-tulips-carnations.com can boost your rankings for searches like 'discount flowers' or 'red roses'
If you sell electronics, you might want
tv-stereos-videogames-telephones.com
If it's real estate…southern-california-real-estate.com

Long domain names have other advantages.
You can reserve your full business name instead of a truncated or distorted version. If you're registering a domain name for this purpose, we recommend leaving the hyphens out. People remember names easier without the hyphens. Search Engines, on the other hand, like domain names with the hyphens.

consolidatedofficefurnitureandequipment.com instead of consolofficefurnequip.com

You can select a 'prestige' name for use on business cards and brochures...

original-philadelphia-cheesesteak.com instead of origphilacheesesteak.com

You can identify or highlight important aspects of your business...

the-no-money-down-furniture-store.com
family-pharmacy-open-all-night.com

These domain names do not replace your current domain name. They are used in conjunction with it, to attract additional visitors to your present site. No need to change that site, no additional sites required. Just have your web host point the new names to your present site.

Added bonus: A fresh start at Yahoo. Most Internet directories, including Yahoo, list sites alphabetically. If you're in a competitive field and your company name is "alphabetically challenged", then your site is probably listed well down in the pack - where nobody can find it. Now you can do something about it. You can reserve a long name starting with 'a' 'b' or 'c' that would put you at the top.

Low cost, great potential benefit. A handful of good names can drive more traffic to your site than traditional banner or print advertising - at a fraction of their cost.

More than 20,000 domain names are being reserved every day. That's 15 domain names every minute. So whether you are looking to boost your search engine rankings or enhance your business identity... the right time is now.

3. Can I transfer my domain name from another registrar to Internet Magic?

YES! You can transfer your domain to Internet Magic. When you transfer your domain you will be required to register your domain for 1 more year, but that year will not start until your previous registration time is up. The advantage of transferring a domain to Internet Magic will be that you can benefit from the customer support and pricing that we offer. You will still be the official owner and registrant of the domain name with full authority to modify any records such as DNS information. Just email us and let us know you'd like to do this and we'll initiate the registrar transfer. You will get an email that you need to reply to in order for the transfer to be authorized.

4. What if I want to buy a domain name, but I don't have any nameservers of my own?

You can register a domain name with Internet Magic even though you don't have any nameservers. Internet Magic will register your domain name with the Internet Magic nameservers as the default. You may set a domain to your own nameservers at any time you wish. A name server is a computer with the software and the data required to resolve domain names to Internet Protocol (IP) numbers. An IP number is a unique, numeric identifier used to specify hosts and networks.

Section 3: After registering a domain

1. Do I receive some kind of verification or documentation after I have registered a domain name with Internet Magic?

Yes. After you register a domain name you will automatically receive an email confirmation from us. If your credit card is denied, then you will receive an email notification that your credit card was declined and the domains were not registered. Additionally, you can login to your account and click on the check account status button to view the domains that you have registered.

2. Once I register a domain name, how long does it take to become active?

After registering a domain with Internet Magic or any other registrar of domains, it typically takes up to 36 hours for your domain to show up in the WHOIS database and for the information on the new domain to propagate to all the root DNS servers. Nevertheless, once you register a domain through Internet Magic you are the undisputed owner of the domain. If you check for the availability of the domain name using WHOIS, it may indicate that the domain is available when it is not. If you believe it's taking unusually long for your domain to show up as active, do not hesitate to email us.

3. I registered my domain name, now what? Why can't I find my web page?

Registering your domain name means that you now own that name and no one else can use it. If you want to have a website on the Internet connected to your domain name, then you need a host4. In order to get your website published on the web, you will need to order a hosting account.

4. Does Internet Magic host sites?

Yes! Internet Magic offers web hosting with a variety of options with low rates and excellent technical support. For more information visit our web hosting site.

5. Can I still use my own nameservers, and make changes to my contact information? How do I do it?

Yes, you have total control over your domain names. When you register, you will be asked to choose a username and password. Once you receive the notice from us that your domain registration is complete, you can log onto your account by going to our site and clicking on the link "Manage Domains" and change any information you want.

6. I have accidentally registered the wrong domain name. What can I do? Will the fee apply again to register the correct name?

Unfortunately, once you have registered a domain, the process cannot be undone. If you wish to register another your credit card will be charged for each subsequent domain you successfully register with Internet Magic.

7. Does modifying the domain, contacts, or nameservers cost anything?

No. Modifications to any records through the use of your account management system are free of charge.

8. What does it mean to "park" my domain?

You can register your domain with us and our name servers will answer for it in the Internet-wide dns system indefinitely. You don't have to spend the money for a web hosting account if you are not ready to put up your website.

9. What does it mean to "redirect" my domain?

Do you have a free website being hosted somewhere else? We can direct your domain name to point to that location so that when someone types in your domain name website address, your free website will come up in their browser. The fee for this is only $24.95 for the whole year. Please put in the comments on the order form that you want to order this service.

Section 4: Reseller program

1. Does Internet Magic offer an affiliate or reseller program?

Yes we do! Just click on "Affiliates" after you've registered your domain name.

Section 5: Other issues

1. Someone else has registered my company's name as a .com domain name. What is the process for resolving my complaint?

All ICANN-accredited Registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration. Once the court rules who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cybersquatting" and cyberpiracy"), the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers listed at http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp.htm
